Gilles-Alexandre DeschaudGilles-Alexandre Deschaud is a 3D animator, designer and stop motion artist from Paris, France. His latest grandiose creation – Chase Me – is a stop motion film that uses entirely 3D printed models and environments. While working in the VFX industry as a digital artist and animator, Gilles-Alexandre experimented with various techniques using a hybrid of 2D mediums, such as painting and drawing, combined with 3D animation.  His experimentation with new styles led him to discover 3D printing with the Form 1+ SLA 3D printer.

One can only imagine the amount of detail and patience a project like this takes to create. It is a marvel to experience one of our favorite entertainment medium’s in a wholly fresh visual perspective. Gilles is stepping onto untrodden ground. In this interview we discuss the inspirations behind Chase Me and why Gilles’ thinks 3D printing will have a huge footprint on the film industry. The rise of 3D animation can only complement the impact of 3D printing as more 3D models are created and stored. The 3D Masterminds Podcast 012: Will Van Epern, Vice President of Avatarium 3D - Podcast – 3D Masterminds

Will Van Epern is the Vice President of Avatarium 3D which is a next generation 3D scanning machine. Instead of taking image captures piece by piece Avatarium 3D literally takes a snapshot of your entire scan at once. The entire process is seamless and I even got a chance to test out a scan for myself at the Inside 3D Printing Conference in Santa Clara.

The machine is awe-inspiring and comparable to one of those chambers you see in the movie Aliens, but way cooler. You strike a pose and the operator takes a snapshot. The entire booth flashes at once and presto your body (or anything) has been scanned! Distinctly, the procedure is called photogrammetry which is a single shutter click that uses multiple cameras firing simultaneously. This process is instantaneous markedly faster and more efficient than other scanning methods we have tested as it can capture objects in motion. The great thing is that the virtual aspect of the technology prepares Avatarium well not only for 3D printing but also Virtual Reality applications in the future. Avatarium 3D’s photogrammetry array is something you have to see to believe.

You can also find Avatarium on Facebook and Twitter.

Mentioned In This Episode:

You Will Learn:

  • How Avatarium got started as a solution for 3D images using photogrammetry.
  • A detailed explanation behind how photogrammetry works and how powerful it is for capturing instant 3D images.
  • How 3D scanning will enable content creation for everyday users of 3D printing in the future.
  • Some of the cool things people will be able create in the future with a 3D scan e.g. a 3D scan of yourself for a video game, animation for film, figurines, keepsakes, etc.
  • The importance of good lighting during the photogrammetry capturing process.
  • Challenges behind creating an advanced technology that is meant for the everyday consumer.
  • The possibility of licensing the Avatarium 3D scanning booths at conventions, concerts, sports stadiums and large public events.
  • Comparing the lessons learned, challenges and costs behind creating both the software and hardware technology to work for 3D scanning using photogrammetry.
  • Custom figurines for wedding, holidays, pets, children and special moments.
  • How 3D printing technology is actually behind the capability of resolution from photogrammetry 3D capture. Color 3D printers will soon be able to produce amazing physical photography.

Alexa and Lauren

Savvy Society is a girls’ fashion brand that is revolutionizing the way young women are being introduced to STEM. Instead of taking a boring numbers and analytical approach to 3D printing, Alexa and Lauren have found a way to establish creativity and fun into an otherwise engineering driven technology.

At their pop-up shop in San Fransisco, one will be able to learn how to use TinkerCAD allowing them to design custom 3D printed accessories for shoes and luxury fashion. Girls are able to create their own designs called Savvy Swirls which are used as accessories for their shoes. #MySavvySwirl

Savvy Society aims to be the future of fashion exchange for young girls and to foster creativity in STEM.

You can also find SavvySociety on FacebookTwitter, YouTube and Instagram.

You Will Learn:

  • The beginnings of how Alexa and Lauren became passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) which was the catalyst for their introduction to 3D printing and subsequently the beginning of Savvy Society.
  • How Alexa and Lauren were able to look at STEM as a creative platform, not necessarily a boring place where people code and solve math problems all day. By asking themselves the question, “how can I get more girls interested in math and engineering?” they were able to brainstorm ideas to inspire kids with creativity through new technologies.
  • Asking young girls personal questions about gifts and friends allowed them to learn what these girls really wanted to create out of STEM.
  • One of the main goals of Savvy Society is to foster young girls with the confidence to become successful designers and creators.
  • Challenges behind teaching girls about 3D printing and getting them interested in making their own designs.
  • What the future of 3D printing will do to help enable a community where people share and reiterate on other people’s designs.
  • Savvy ways Savvy Society is preparing themselves for a future of 3D designs printed on demand.
  • How looking at shapes in new perspectives has been extremely important for innovation. For example, emoji’s are fun objects that we probably would not be able to make without 3D printing.

In this very special episode I discuss a multitude of ways anyone can begin to learn how to utilize 3D printing technology. Whether you are simply optimizing your business or changing the landscape of architecture, there are almost infinite possibilities for the use of 3D printing. I definitely encourage beginning 3D enthusiasts to first experiment with creative projects such as 3D modeling or simply sharing the 3D printer you already have. 3D printing is a phenomenal tool to start learning about the possibilities of the next industrial revolution because of the front to end process that is available now worldwide.

Think it, design it, print it. It really has become that simple. The toughest challenge, as with most businesses, will be marketing your idea.

How To Make Money With 3D Printing

Although I published this book about an year ago the 7 ways I outlined and the fundamentals of 3D printing technology still ring true today. As a bonus I have included one extra way to make money, so stay tuned (and it’s an important one too!).

River Castelonia is the Co-Founder and Executive Director at HavenLabs, a non-profit being assembled by engineers, programmers, and thinkers. The mission of HavenLabs is to design custom 3D printed prosthetics for American Veterans. HavenLabs hopes to be role models for others in the community and push the boundaries of 3D printing applications.

River Castelonia TEDx

HavenLabs TEDxTalk @ ManhattanCollege

With the use of 3D scanning technology, HavenLabs will be able to create an exact fit that is contoured to the shape of the amputee’s limb, therefore offering a true extension of the individual. Using this innovative process takes mere minutes, whereas traditional prosthetic molds take hours.

By using 3D printing the team is able to create prosthetics that are not only customized, but also made with unique materials. The 3D design process saves time from having to experiment with expensive molds and allows for flexibility and creativity. Last but not least, 3D printing dramatically reduces the cost of prototyping prosthetics enabling access to millions of people worldwide.

River’s passion for designing, creating and introducing prosthetics for people in need shines through in his vision and in his work. If you know someone who may be in need of a prosthetic arm, whether they are a veteran, pet or just a friend, be sure to consider the possibility of a customizable 3D printed prosthetic.
